“What is it about F1?”

Monday, 17 October 2016

On Tuesday 6th September the London branch held a meeting at the National Liberal club at which John Symes spoke about his long and interesting career in the forefront of motor sport, from rally cross all the way up to formula 1, spending many years as clerk of the course at Brands Hatch dealing and making lifelong friends with many of the larger than life characters from the sport such as Jackie Stewart, Frank Williams and Tom Walkinshaw to name but a few.

John spoke enthusiastically at length about his time in the industry and gave an extremely informative and entertaining talk with many tales and anecdotes from his long and varied association from “difficult” drivers to grumpy brown bear drivers! (Yes, that is correct!).

Given the extremely entertaining nature of the talk and John’s absolute enthusiasm for entertaining us all for the entire evening, it was particularly disappointing that despite plenty of prior advertising, only a handful of members were able to attend this evening’s talk.
As can be seen from the picture above of our past president Doug Hills, a lifelong friend of Johns introducing him to the audience, the numbers were sparse, and although those who did attend enjoyed the evening immensely, not just Johns presentation but the excellent buffet afterwards during which we were able to chat convivially, it was very disappointing that the numbers were so low.

As the talk was so well received, and John’s enthusiasm remains undimmed with still many, many tales still to tell, we have asked that he returns in the near future to again address a meeting of the London Branch and we will be advertising this shortly as soon as we have finalised the timing and the venue.

I do ask, as current London Branch president for members support in making the next occasion as well attended as possible to ensure that we remain able to attract speakers such as John into the future.
