West Midlands Banquet 2016
Wednesday, 22 June 2016
The West Midlands, Coventry and Birmingham Branch Annual Banquet was once again, a very enjoyable event. Ian Shergold MICME, representing Branch President, Gareth Jeremiah Prof MICME, was pleased to welcome both the National President, John Townsend FICME, as well as immediate Past President, Mark Fenyes FICME
The President’s principle guest, David Wilkinson Prof MICME spoke about the current emphasis on innovation, noting that in spite of the impression that this was somehow something new, in reality it is the creative outcome of a continuous learning process that has been going on for thousands of years, in all aspects of life.
He reminded those present that in our industry, this has been achieved, not only through formal education and classroom based teaching, but very much in the practical hands on transfer of experience at shop floor level.
The opening of the new Elite Centre for Manufacturing Skills in 2017 he said, sends a clear message to the sector that there was a long term commitment to skills development, something that the industry has neglected, to its evident cost in recent decades.
The generosity of people in the industry, sharing knowledge and experience freely, remain the lifeblood of innovation.
David closed by extolling that “it should be our pleasure and our duty to encourage and educate the younger and future members of our institute and industry. They are, after all, its hope and its’ future!”
